I have 4 machines...1 Win7...2 Vista and an XP...the Win 7 machine totally blacked out on startup with only a moveable cursor on the screen. After trying several fixes...I unpluged the machine for a few minutes and at restart it ran normally. One of the Vista machines lost only the wallpaper and had a black screen with all desktop features available and it was functioning otherwise. I restored the wallpaper by a right click on the photo...it could not be restored through desktop properties. The Xp and other Vista machine were not affected.
All of these machines had been shut down properly and restared after a few days of being away. The 2 machines affected by the black screen issue were both running Zone Alarm Extreme Security, the Xp was running ZAPro.
Both of the machines that were affected have always been quirky about power settings changing and if the Win 7 machine goes to sleep, it will lose internet.
Saw your article and wanted to comment about my Black Screen encounter, this all happened in the last week and is no doubt a MS update conflict.
